China installed more solar panels in 2023 than any other nation has ever built in total. 9 gigawatts of solar power the country added shattered its previous record of 87.
Will China set a new record for solar power installations in 2024?
A worker inspects solar photovoltaic panels in Huaibei, Anhui province, on Dec 16. LI XIN/FOR CHINA DAILY China is on track to set a new record for solar power installations in 2024, driven by falling production costs and increased global interest in renewable energy, said industry experts and company executives.
Will China's crowded solar power sector keep global prices low?
Consolidation in China's crowded solar power sector is pushing smaller players out of the market, but excess production capacity - with more on the way - threatens to keep global prices low for years.
With the world's largest, most complete new-energy industry chain, China is expected to install 230 to 260 gigawatts of solar capacity this year, topping the record of 217 GW set last year, according to the China Photovoltaic Industry Association.
How many solar PV installations are there in China this year?
"Solar PV installations have maintained a quite high pace this year, and we had seen an average of over 18 GW of monthly installations this year in China till October," said Zhu Yicong, vice-president of renewables and power research at global consultancy Rystad Energy.
China's combined crystalline silicon solar module production output within the 10 months of this year rounded up to 453 GW. It exported about 205.9 GW volume. The country's solar PV installations during the same period added up to 181.30 GW (see China's January-October 2024 Solar PV Installations Exceed 180 GW).
What happened to solar panels in China?
As a result, in the decade through to 2020, the cost of solar panels fell about 85 per cent. Earnings have deteriorated: about a third of China's listed solar companies reported a loss last year and several went bankrupt.
