I am curious on the communities opinion on solar panels Series or Parallel for Van Life or RV. I wanted to get a more in depth answer to people who actually use these two options in the real world on a RV or Van. I have two Renogy 12v 200W solar panels currently in parallel with about a 17 foot span from the solar panels to the charge controller.
It is possible to connect two 36 cell panels in series and then parallel them with a 72 cell panel. But you would want the combined voltages of the two 36 cell panels to match that of the 72 cell panel, as close as possible.

When installing solar panels in series, the voltage adds up, but the current stays the same for all of the elements. For example, if you installed 5 solar panels in series – with each solar panel rated at 12 volts and 5 amps – you''d still have 5 amps but a full 60 volts. There are some major benefits to connecting solar panels in series.
Series wiring connects each solar panel in a line, with the current flowing from one to the next. Parallel wiring connects all of the panels together at one point, with each panel connected individually.
In a series connection, the positive terminals of multiple solar panels are connected to the negative terminals, creating a pathway for the current. This causes the current to flow through each panel, while the voltage adds up across the panels. Series-connected solar panels can increase the total output voltage. Parallel Connection

RV Solar Kits. Tiny Home Kits. High Watt Solar Kits ( From 300W) Solar panels connected in series form a specific configuration in photovoltaic systems where multiple panels are linked together in a single line or string. In this arrangement, the positive terminal of one panel is connected to the negative terminal of the next panel
When solar panels are connected in series, there is only one path for the current to flow. Generally speaking, a series connection is preferable for most smaller solar projects. Usually, this includes RV, boat, trailer, and camper van trips. The major reasons why a series connection is better than a parallel one for solar panels include:
Solar panels connected in series form a specific configuration in photovoltaic systems where multiple panels are linked together in a single line or string. In this arrangement, the positive terminal of one panel is connected to
When adding panels in series the power must be equal or all panels will de-rate to the lowest wattage. You 195 watt panels will turn in to 95 watt panels if you add a 95 watt
Designing an RV solar panel system can be a bit of a challenge, particularly if you want to be able to master the benefits of off-grid living. Yet, RV solar power systems are becoming more and more the norm in the RV lifestyle. As solar
Key takeaways. The way in which solar panels are wired determines how the system performs and what inverter the system can be paired with. When solar panels are wired in series, the positive terminal of one solar module is connected to the negative terminal of another, which increases the voltage of the solar system.
Solar Panels in Series vs Parallel: The great debate. but when there is a solution as simple as moving the RV or replacing a broken panel; I would struggle to recommend a more complex and expensive solution. I need 200w. I could choose a single panel but noting your comments for adding voltages for panels connected in series and the
When one sees a group of solar panels installed on a RV, house, building, etc. the term most often used to describe the installation is Solar Array. Doubling of voltage is what happens to solar panels that are connected in series as well. Two 32 V / 9 A output solar panels would output 64 V at the charge controller when connected in series
For a series connection, connect the negative lead from one panel with the positive lead from the other, and then connect the remaining positive and negative leads to the adapter kit. A parallel connection maintains a 12-volt system, while a
Solar Panels Wired in Series. Each solar panel has a positive and a negative terminal. A series connection is created when one panel''s positive terminal is connected to the negative terminal of another. When solar panels are wired in series, the array''s voltage is added together while the current (or amps) stays the same.
Series wiring is beneficial if you need to run wiring a long (e.g. 100 feet) distance. Smaller gauge wire can be used due to the lower amperage flowing through the wire. If wiring in series, all of the panels should be of the same brand, size and age to maximize your efficiency. A series wired solar array is only as powerful as the weakest panel.
Solar Panels Series vs Parallel: What Is The Difference? Whether you connect solar panels in series or in parallel, the total power output (in Watts) is the sum of the power generated by each solar panel. The
In a series connection, the voltage from each solar panel adds up, while the current remains constant across all panels. For example, if you connect three 12V panels in series, the voltage becomes 36V (12V x 3), while the current stays the same as that of a single panel. Benefits of Series Connections:
Unlike fixed solar panels or portable solar panels, a portable solar generator is an all-in-one unit that usually includes solar panels, battery storage, and an inverter. Solar generators are a great option for small RVs or van conversions, especially where energy demand is low and isn''t used frequently.
There are two ways to wire together your RV solar panels; you can wire them in series, or parallel. These two methods are both good, but
Step 5: Connect Solar Panels in Series or Parallel. During Step 1, you should have already decided whether you''ll benefit most from connecting your PV panels in series or parallel. In small systems, e.g., two solar panels
Series or parallel solar panels for RV? In an RV, you will expect shading to happen. It can be a branch or a fallen leaf on the panels. In an RV you want to harvest every watt you can. If you then connect them in series, the panels will drop down to the current of the lowest value panel like shown in the series example. If you expect shade
Whether it''s for off-grid electricity or adding solar power to your RV, it''s always similar. How you connect solar panels, series vs. parallel, has a major impact on the voltage and amperage output. Series connections add voltage. Parallel adds amperage. Be very careful with series connections since going over voltage will cause damage.
The PWM charge controller will decrease the solar panel operating voltage to a desirable level to charge the battery bank and it will not adjust the operating current of the solar panel. Therefore, when connect multiple panel in series, the voltage values of each panel are added up together, and the amperage values are not added up and stay the
Wiring your RV solar panels in parallel means using more cable than wiring in series. In parallel, solar panels aren''t connected end-to-end as they are in a series configuration, which often results in the need for cable
I am a bit confused on the advantages of connecting solar panels in series vs parallel when using a MPPT controller to charge a 12 volt battery. I''ve read a couple of posts in regards to the Victron MPPT controllers (I have a 75/15) which can connect several panels in series (in my case, up to 75 volts).
About 3 years ago when many prices started to drop on various solar panels and accessories, I finally took the dive and learned as much as I could about solar. When wiring solar panels in series, you are essentially connecting them in a daisy chain, which increases the voltage output of your system. For example, if you connect two 12-volt panels in series, you get 24 volts. This method is popular in large residential and off-grid solar systems where higher voltage is needed to power inverters and other equipment efficiently.
I just had the 400 watts of flexible solar panels on my RV replaced with 400 watts using rigid panels, and had the existing PWM controller replaced with a Victron 30 amp MPPT controller. When I asked the installer if he was going to connect the panels in series or parallel he said that he had better success connecting them in series, and
There are two ways to wire together your RV solar panels; you can wire them in series, or parallel. These two methods are both good, but you'll get different results in different situations. Wiring in series is similar to Christmas tree lights; it's strung together on the same line.
Getting solar panels for your RV is a smart choice, but when stepping into the world of solar panels, it's easy to feel bogged down by questions. If you're not an expert electrician, you might find yourself wondering, what are series and parallel circuits, and which one works best for RV solar panels?
This increases the voltage but keeps the amperage the same. Parallel wiring runs all of the positive wires into one combiner, and all of the negative wires into another combiner. This keeps the voltage the same but increases the amperage. Wiring RV solar panels in series is the cheaper and more flexible option.
When discussing solar panel series vs parallel configurations, parallel wiring is a distinct approach to connecting multiple solar panels. In a parallel connection, all positive terminals of the solar panels are connected together, and all negative terminals are likewise joined. This setup differs significantly from solar panels in series.
Solar panels connected in series form a specific configuration in photovoltaic systems where multiple panels are linked together in a single line or string. In this arrangement, the positive terminal of one panel is connected to the negative terminal of the next panel, creating a continuous electrical path.
The issue with shading is an oft-cited reason for wiring campervan solar panels in parallel vs series (and it's really the only point in favor of parallel wiring). We used parallel connections in our first van for this exact reason.
