100 watts or more: These are the largest solar chargers that you can still pack away to move. They're the best energy-intensive devices and have fast charging speeds to keep your large battery banks or power stations full. A 110-watt panel is best for charging a large power station when off-grid camping.
Portable solar chargers balance packability and charging capacity. Solar panels for camping are generally larger than portable models. They also have a higher capacity to convert sunlight into energy. The chart below shows the overall score for each model we tested.
The majority of portable solar panels for camping are pretty minimal in terms of features. Most consist primarily of the panel and USB ports. Additional features include a pocket for cables, grommets or loops to attach the panels to a pack or tent, and on some, stands to help keep the panel upright and at the right angle.
These chargers are usually designed to be used more like a portable battery pack and less like a solar panel because the solar panel often isn't big enough to reliably generate a lot of power from the sun. The panel will work in a pinch, but it can be slow to charge the integrated battery.
How to charge a solar panel for use in the outdoors Set them up toward the sun and, if propping them up on rocks or sticks, try to minimize the shadows beneath them. You can also attach them to your tent or on the front of your backpack — just orient them so they cast the smallest shadow.
The FlexSolar 40W solar panel has a DC charging output, and it put out more power from this output than the USB-A output we used for our main test. The BigBlue SolarPowa 30 and Blavor 30W Foldable each have a DC charging port as well. Both of these panels performed better when charging a battery using the DC power output rather than the USB-A port.
