Absence of dielectric material, differentiate the conventional capacitors from the supercapacitors, as shown in the Fig. 3 . The design of a structural capacitor should include consideration of the capacitance of the interface between the dielectric film and electrode. The design should also address the electrical contacts on the structural capacitor.
Since service life and safety are essential for structural capacitors, dielectric structural capacitors are more promising than structural supercapacitors, in spite of the fact that the capacity for small-scale energy storage tends to be greater for a supercapacitor than a dielectric capacitor.
The abovementioned structural simplicity of dielectric capacitors results in relatively low tendency for the capacitor structure to degrade the mechanical properties of the structural composite. In order to avoid loss in mechanical properties, the fiber volume fraction must remain high.
This first report of a structural capacitor was a decade later confirmed by Carlson et al., , who reported a capacitance of 450 nF/m 2 at 0.1 Hz, as obtained using PET of thickness 50 µm as the dielectric film. Other than PET, dielectric polymers used include polyamide and polycarbonate .
There is also a certain comfort level among engineers at the capacitor manufacturer with working with materials they know and whose reactions they have come to understand over decades of trial and error. It is for this reason that the investments in the existing dielectrics have created the most value for the shareholder over time.
Thus, continuous fiber polymer-matrix composites, which are well-known for their combination of low density, high elastic modulus and high strength, are attractive for serving as the base material for modification to render the capacitor function. This review is thus focused on structural capacitors in the form of polymer-matrix composites.
